Explore Emotions: Research

1.What Is An Emotion

“There is no consensus in the literature on a definition of emotion.”

“The term is taken for granted in itself and, most often, emotion is defined with reference to a list: anger, disgust, fear, joy, sadness, and surprise.”

“Emotion is any mental experience with high intensity and high hedonic content (pleasure/displeasure).”

2.Emotional Detachment

What it is? — Inability or unwillingness to connect with other people on an emotional level.

Positive emotional detachment: helps protect people from unwanted drama, anxiety, or stress.

Negative emotional detachment: feel “numbed” or “muted”

Symptoms: reduced ability to express emotion; not easily sharing emotions or feelings; can’t engage in conversations from an emotional standpoint; difficulty creating or maintaining personal relationships; a lack of attention, or appearing preoccupied when around others.

Causes: by choice — as a result of abuse, others; by choice — choose to proactively remove me from an emotional situation to help me remain cool and keep me calm.
