IDP Final Exhibition

This is the implement of a former project called

— Lucy Zhang

This work wants to show the impact of the development of science and technology on mankind. It was inspired by my previous experience of insomnia: lying on the bed, the surroundings seemed to be dark, but I felt some strange light appeared. Sometimes it was extremely silent, and sometimes there were some rustling sounds around the bed.

peer assessment

At the beginning, the surroundings of the audience were dark and silent, simulating the environment when there was no technology at all in the ancient times: no lights, only torches and bonfires, no mechanical sounds, only the sound of stones hitting and gurgling water; then , The surrounding environment began to change slowly, and some human noises gradually began to appear. At this time, technology began to slowly develop, accompanied by melodious music, and some car roars appeared; before that, humans and technology and nature coexist peacefully , The surrounding environment is still pitch black, and the audience feels drowsy in this mild environment. Just like the upper part of the picture.

The roar of the train is getting louder and louder, gradually mixed with some strong music and some harsh sounds🔊. The surrounding dark environment was also illuminated for an instant, and dazzling lights of various colors came out randomly from all corners of the space, which instantly formed a strong contrast with the previous dark environment-just like the damage caused by excessive use of technology to humans and nature, expressed in an abstract way.

Volume of Sound

Hanging on the tall shelves are all kinds of objects that make sounds, which may be keys, metal chopsticks, spoons, or anything from life. There are several microphones 🎤 hung between them, which can amplify any tiny sounds made by objects. There are two speakers below the suspended object, which can play the sound of their collision, making it easier for the audience to hear them. What this work wants to express is a kind of butterfly effect. When a person starts to make a sound, no matter how small, it breaks the silence of the environment. This has caused more and more people to make voices. Similarly, when an object moves, it will drive the objects around it to move; when the objects around it move, it will drive the objects around them to move. The audience can also freely use their own things to exchange the objects that have been hung on it. Increasing the sense of interaction will also bring some small surprises to the audience.

People can detect the small noise of objects colliding through loudspeakers: in life, if we are willing to listen, we will find a way to hear some small but beautiful sounds and stories.🌹

Thermostat Cupp

It is good to have hot water when you want hot water and cold water when you want cold water.

This is a water cup with adjustable temperature. In daily life, hot water needs to be kept warm with a vacuum flask, and cold water needs to be cooled with a cold kettle. And this water cup combines two functions, it can not only heat the water temperature, but also cool it.

This inspiration comes from air conditioners. Air conditioners usually have two modes: one is the set temperature and the other is the actual temperature. We can set the temperature and let the air conditioner cool the actual temperature to the set temperature. The LED screen imitates the panel for air conditioning. The charging cable of the thermostat uses a type-C connector, which can charge faster. The LED thermostat button and panel are charged by the solar panel on the lid.

Its biggest feature, apart from controlling the temperature, is a decompress button, which gives people a place to relax their “nowhere to put” fingers.

The hope is that people who use it will be able to have hot water when they want it, and cold water when they want it.

LED Cups

A glass that is both transparent and opaque.

This is a LED cup.

When fully charged, the sensor on the inner wall of the LED lamp will detect the height and temperature of the liquid in the cup and simulate the liquid in the cup. If it is hot, the color is warm, the hotter the liquid, the darker the color; if it is cold, the color is cold, and the colder the liquid, the darker the color. The temperature range sensed by the sensor is 100 degrees Celsius to 0 degrees Celsius. The sensor can also sense the position and fluctuation of the liquid.

The red cup on the left contains hot liquid, and the blue cup on the right contains cold liquid.
Below is the charging cable for charging the cup parts.

For example, the cup contains hot coffee at 85 degrees Celsius. Then the sensor will perceive the temperature of the coffee and the height in the cup, and then show a darker red. If the cup is shaken, the liquid in the cup produces swaying ripples, and the LED bulb can simulate this kind of water wave. If the cup is tilted, the water in the cup is tilted to one side, and the LED bulb can reflect the position where the water is tilted.

This kind of water cup can not only keep warm, but also can accurately see the liquid in the cup through the LED bulb and reflect the temperature of the liquid. There will be no scalding when drinking water. And the LED light bulb interaction will make people feel that drinking water is fun.
