Artist Statement

I m 15 years old now while I m writing this paper, as I been doing and interested in art for many years.

I get interested in art when I m 3 years old. I started from using crayon, and now my most interest is in water color propylene, painting, markers, collage and sometimes 3D. I rarely create with a strong sense of purpose except in school, and most inspiration comes from the spontaneous moments in life.

When I was in Primary and secondary schools, I prefer concrete things and cartoons. But then I found out that no matter what I thought about the characters I drew at that time, I not willing to look back at them again in the future.

As I grew older, I began to consciously seeking my own identity, what kind of style I will prefer to show in my art pieces. I began to focus more on colors instead of specific outlines. I found that for me, different colors were the most important colors in an art piece. Different colors made different senses and different emotions through the work. For me, colors has a magical connection to mood, atmosphere, and even other senses.

Before I used my time both to do my own project and explore different art materials and different ways to do art. The strong feeling of propylene, the fluidity of watercolor and use daily materials to create 3D art works had been the things I m doing.

This work below is a 3D work I did years ago. All the empty beer bottles were my dad’s. I also picked up some old tape cassettes, key chains and counterfeit money in order to add more elements to my final work. To create a retro bistro scene, hiding stories in them.

And different kinds of art forms were always in my trying list. I have drawn a complete paper tower and also tried large acrylic works. I always use lots of bright color blocks and compositions to complete my painting. My reflection on the past works is that there is no definite creation theme, and the works are not so detailed because of the large areas.

In this semester, after I came to Moonshot I been to explore a whole different area, that is doing art works with ipad and laptop. Creating on the ipad is largely a matter of reworking and minimizing mistakes. With my ipad I do two posters and one logo for the school, and I produce the first picture book of my own. Called “Yellow roses in the a mango – color room”

It is about relationships between parents and the affects to child. Narrated from the perspective of children, mixed with children’s dreams and understanding of family love. The work is full with emotions and I used bright colors for all the backgrounds. The main story of the book is a bite heavy but the ending was kind. It is also the first ever picture book that is actually print out like a real book.

As I begin to study in high school, I found that illustrations is the one I love for now. Illustrations’ form is mostly in 2D, which is the form I been good at since I touch art, and there is a lot of room for development in illustration. For me, illustration is a direct form of expression to express implicit content. With the changes of environment and time, I m always facing different problems and dealing with different cultures. Pay attention to different kinds of problems and events whether they are happening around or in society or in other places in the world. Different events and problems will bring me a lot of different thinking and different inspirations. I often use metaphors or direct expressions in my works, which will also change the materials I use due to my topic and sense. It was a very interesting process for me to explore. I use different images or colors to express problems, meanings, emotions and things in my illustration work, it made me felt free and great satisfaction.

In the future, I plan to explore more on what is the art style that I like or trying things that r new for me. As I know, the more elements I try, the more possible interest I will found. To produce more work, not only to record what I been thinking and doing, but also making real affect to others through my work.

Through painting, I observe what happens around me, my reaction to what happens, and observe the world. I am always exploring my connection with the world and society. With more and more dabbling and observation, my painting style has not been so fixed, but it has been a process of exploration and progress. Whatever where I m, I have always been trying to express what I want to express in the way of painting.
