This is one of the projects in my portfolio. Compared with the last one, I have made great progress in the following aspects:
1 Diversity of research. In this project, I investigated people’s views on hair in modern society and compared it with the traditional culture of ancient China. I also looked up the works of Fiona Roberts, a related artist, to understand what she expressed in her works, and then I thought and divergent again to form my own ideas. In the aspect of reality investigation, I also interviewed many people around me about the idea of staying up late and other content, providing materials for the follow-up project promotion.
2 Rich experiments. Compared with previous projects, I have conducted a lot of experiments this time, trying to use materials including but not limited to gutta percha, wig, canvas, electric fan, etc., fully visualizing the idea and guess, and achieving good visual effects. I not only made installations, but also visual things such as painting and collage.
3 Iterate the project content for many times. At first, I was just curious about the hair, so I started to research from this point, and paid great attention not to set limits or think “I want to make something”. In the process of follow-up research, due to a large amount of knowledge input, my project direction gradually became clear after several iterations, and finally came to the conclusion that “modern people don’t care about their own health”, thus determining the output form of final work.
At the same time, what I have gained most from the process of doing the project is that I have a clearer understanding of the research part. I understand that it is not formalism or simply based on the theme of the project to find similar things that others have done. Instead, I need to research the corresponding content according to the current thinking and needs, and extract the valuable parts from these information for re research divergent, to achieve project promotion.
Generally speaking, it’s a painful (because trying new materials often makes mistakes) but enjoyable project 😀
