Introduction

This video is my English assignment and we have to choose to perform a piece of the play ourselves.

My choice to perform a clip of Rent was actually an idea that came to me a long time ago. I’ll Cover You is one of my favorite songs in Rent. The song appears twice, and I chose the first time, at a time when Angel and Collins hadn’t been forced to confront the Sickness and death, but also happiness and hope. I love the character of Angel, his love is passionate and pure, compassionate, funny and confident, like an angel. He brought warmth to this not-so-perfect group of people.

At the beginning of the project, I found three different versions of live videos of Rent musical to watch, and figured out the characteristics of Angel and Collins as well as their distinct personal styles.

Then I analyzed the scenery, costumes, actors’ movements, tone and other elements in the musical, extracted the part that could best represent the two roles and the song “I’ll Cover you” (Due to the limitation of shooting at home, I could not completely restore the furnishings in the theater), and prepared some essential costumes and props.

Then I watched the song again and again in musicals, movies and other stages, considering that I had to play two parts in one, and I designed the lens effect That I wanted.

After a day of shooting and two days of post-editing, the finished product is the video above.

Self-reflection

This was the first time I shot a musical-themed video, and I experienced the transition from audience to actor through this project. Since I was responsible for all the preparations, shooting and post-editing, I learned that when watching a musical, I should not only look at the overall performance effect, but also analyze the help that specific movements of actors bring to shaping the characters. Change the shooting arrangement according to the actual situation, and adjust it in time when there are problems in the shooting process; Acting and singing; Arrange time and energy reasonably so that the video can be completed within a very short homework time; Self-taught Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Audition for post-production video and audio editing. I have made a careful plan and a clear schedule for the video shooting, and I have carried it out strictly, showing my self-regulation ability.

On the other hand, the video still leaves a lot to be desired. For example, When I am facing the camera, I will feel nervous unconsciously, which makes my expression a little stiff. Later, I can record more videos facing the camera. There was no clear judgment on the presentation effect of the picture, so that the arms would disappear or the eyes would fail to make eye contact during editing. In the future, if the video of one person playing two roles was to be recorded, it was necessary to compare the recorded clips at any time and refine the draft of the storyboard.
